According to a news release by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, hair restoration surgery is gaining popularity worldwide and across gender lines. Approximately 225,800 procedures were done last year, a 34 percent increase from 2004. This statistic includes a 2.4 percent increase in procedures done for women.
The procedure is gaining ground with the younger ranks as well; the survey showed a 2 percent increase in men ages 20-29 between 2004-2006.
The increase is said to be caused by the consistent refinement of the transplantation process and the nearly undetectable results. Without a raised awareness about new happenings and advancements with the procedure by way of various news media and social outlets, such as ourselves, the effectiveness of such a procedure would never get as much attention as it has.
Here are some other facts outlined in the news release from a survey taken in 2006:
• The total number of hair restoration patients
worldwide rose from 361,077 patients in 2004 to 645,281 patients in 2006.
• In 2006, females comprised 13.8 percent of surgical hair
restoration patients, up from 11.4 percent in 2004.
• More than half (57.9 percent) of both male and female patients fell between the ages of 30-49.
• Patients in their 30s represented the age group with the largest number of patients
undergoing hair restoration surgery (31.4 percent males and 26.4 percent
females).
• 92.9 percent of hair transplantation procedures targeted the scalp. The other 7.1 percent targeted the eyebrows (3.4 percent), the face (1.5 percent) and the eyelashes (1.4 percent).
