Baldness may be a caused by a stem cell defect
A study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation shows that a stem cell malfunction may be the cause of androgenetic alopecia (common baldness). The discovery presents new hope for not just hair loss prevention technology, but also the ability to regrow hair on a bald scalp.
The study showed that tissue from both bald and haired heads have the number of cells that can produce hair. The difference between the two are the size of the cells - progenitor cells (the ones that produce hair) from bald tissue are miniaturized, preventing their ability to produce visible hair.
Now that researches identified the problem on a cellular level, they can begin to research how to reactivate the existing, miniaturized progenitor cells in bald tissue.
