Confirmed: Smoking accelerates hair loss
Last year, a study conducted at the Far Eastern Memorial Hospital suggested that smoking can accelerate hair loss in men. Researcher Lin-Hui Su found that smoking not only destroys hair follicles, it also interferes with circulation and may interfere with hormones and increase the production of estrogen.
A study conducted just this year suggested the same. A report in the British Medical Journal studied more than 600 men and women, half of which were smokers — the results showed that a larger number of the smoker control group exhibited early onset hairless than did the non-smokers (of course, many other variables were controlled in order to accurately determine this).
The 2008 study looked at 740 men in Taiwan with an average age of 65. It concluded that the use of cigarettes played a large role in the development of moderate to severe hair loss in patients who smoked a pack or more a day.
Looks like the jury is out.
