New Jersey Girl Donates Hair To Kids With Alopecia
I read a great story this afternoon in The Sentinel that made me feel a little more optimistic about the future. A 6 year old New Jersey girl with long curly hair down to the middle of her back helped make a difference this week when she participated in a cut-athon sponsored by the Locks of Love organization. Olivia Idrissi was hesitant at first but after a friend told her about her experience with Locks of Love and Olivia’s mother explained what the organization was trying to do, Olivia jumped at the chance.
Locks of Love provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the U.S. and Canada who have long-term medical hair loss that is the result of any medical condition. Most of the children the group helps have hair loss caused by alopecia areata or cancer. Madonna Coffman started the group in 1997 after her 4 year old daughter was diagnosed with alopecia. Since then the organization has helped over 2000 children receive high-quality hair prosthetics made of donated hair.
Olivia Idrissi is now a staunch supporter. She has said she plans to grow her hair out again so that she can participate in a Locks of Love event in the future.
