Hormonal hair loss in women
Most women will suffer from some form of hair loss, whether from pattern baldness, illness, or even from the use of birth control.
Research done on women's hair loss has shown that after menopause, when a woman has a decrease in the production of the hormone estrogen, there is a corresponding increase in hair loss. Because birth control pills contain estrogen, they have been shown to have a positive effect in cases of menopausal hair loss because they raise the level of hormones—in doing so, they encourage hair growth and extend the growth phase of the hair follicles. However, birth control pills are also known to cause temporary hair loss, causing hair to fall out faster for a period of time, approximately 3-4 months after the start of the pills. This is only temporary, so continuing the use of the birth control is important because your hair will soon return to its natural hair growth and loss patterns.
Discontinuing the use of birth control pills can have a similar hair loss effect. Hormones become unbalanced when terminating birth control, and the amount of estrogen and progesterone in the body changes, sometimes causing hair loss in women.
The catalyst for hair loss is a change in hormones, whether you are going through menopause, beginning the use of oral contraceptives or discontinuing them. It's a common problem but it's not permanent. Just be patient.
