A clinical trial of BioSil™, a silicon supplement, showed that the product increases hair thickness, strength and elasticity. The 9-month test included 48 women with fine hair; half were given the silicon supplement while the other half were given a placebo. The group taking BioSil™ showed significant results, including a 3.8 percent increase in hair fiber diameter, which was almost three times as much as the placebo group. Additionally, the placebo group displayed a 10.8 percent decrease in the elasticity of their hair fibers while the BioSil™ group displayed no change at all.
Silicon tablets consist of stabilized orthosilicic acid, an acid that facilitates bone calcification and mineralization. Lack of silicon in the body is known to cause brittle hair and nails, skeletal abnormalities and thin arteries and capillaries.
A new treatment for hair loss? Hardly. A supplement that may be able to slow the degenerative characteristics of aging, namely hair loss? Well, the results from the clinical trials appear to think so.
