Cure for male menopause
Scottish company Prostrakan announced that it has just launched a prescription synthetic testosterone gel for men–Tostran–that relieves all symptoms of male menopause.
What's male menopause? You may ask. Put simply, it's the symptoms of aging, which include: hair loss, weight gain, irritability and impotence. The gel is applied all over the body, absorbing through the skin to cure the symptoms of "hypogonadism," the technical term for male menopause. Hypogonadism is a condition where the body no longer produces enough testosterone, which is responsible for the development of male characteristics, and causes the above-mentioned symptoms.
If the gel is supposed to be an "all-inclusive" cure for so many different symptoms, couldn't that broad range potentially lead to many side effects? More research should be done to target the diagnosis of such symptoms of hypogonadism. They are so wide-reaching that centralizing treatment of particular symptoms may be the smartest route. As mentioned in an earlier blog entry, targeted diagnosis in cancer patients is already allowing doctors to treat specific cancer cells, rather than treating the entire body for cancer. This practice reduces side effects and gets rid of treatments, like chemotherapy, that are detrimental to the body and immune system.
